and Kowloon East Batteries
will be about the
same as that
hitherto provided. From this
amount has to be deducted the
value of the steam launch "Ubique" and that of any stores in hand
on the
completion of the works.
2. As per my letter of the 20th March
1889, it was reported that there
was a probable saving of about £6,000, but that this estimate
was a rough one. A list of the principal
items which were not foreseen
in the estimate referred to amount to about £6800.
3. In explanation of the first
item I have to state that the
estimate did not take into
account the completion of the
top 5 feet of the parapets of the
B.L. Gun emplacements.
It was not known at the time that
the parapets of the 10" and 9.5"
B.L. Guns were to be carried
up to the top with cement concrete, but the estimate should have
provided for the completion of the parapets of the 6" B.L. Guns, and I regret that this was omitted.
4. The storm at the end of
May caused considerable
damage, as already reported, and the cost of repairing this
was about £2,000.
5. The construction of cells for Quick Firing Guns had
not been ordered when the
estimate was framed, and the holding down bolts for the
platforms, which were to be sent from England,
had to be made locally and
charged to the Colonial Defence.
